Introduction & Profile

Prof Maneesh Bhatia is a Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon.  He works at University Hospitals of Leicester, Nuffield Health Leicester, and Spire Leicester Hospital.  He enjoys teaching and is a Professor at DeMontfort University, Leicester and  an Associate Professor at the University of Leicester. He has been elected to the council of European Foot ankle Society Council and is one of the key decision makers regarding the future of foot ankle surgery in Europe. He is passionate about foot and ankle research and education and plays a very active role as a committee member of the Scientific Committee of the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) and the Education Committee of the British Foot Ankle Society (BOFAS). He has written three books in the fields of foot and ankle surgery, joint injections and Orthopaedic education for Primary care that have been translated in international languages. One of these books won the prestigious BMA best book award in 2021. He is currently writing his 4th book on the surgical techniques in foot and ankle due to be released in early 2026. He is the founder and director of the British European Foot Ankle Academy (BEOFAA) which is a global teaching forum with one of the best faculty from Europe and United Kingdom. So far BEOFAA has trained 150 surgeons from more than 30 countries.

His special interests include- Bunion Surgery, Forefoot reconstruction, Failed bunion surgery, Morton’s Neuroma, Joint preserving surgery for arthritis of big toe, Surgery for arthritis of foot and ankle, Ankle arthroscopy, Arthroscopic ankle fusion, Flat foot reconstruction, Sports injury to foot & ankle, Ankle ligament repair, Tendon disorders around foot and ankle (Tibialis posterior, Peroneal tendons, Achilles tendon), surgery for recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy, Achilles rupture, Neglected Achilles rupture and Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) which is a highly effective treatment of tendon-related pain.

Mr Bhatia also runs a Joint Injection course at Leicester, that he started in 2012. This course is primarily catered to General Physicians to help them learn safe technique to perform musculoskeletal injections in community.

Training & Other Activities

Prof Bhatia completed his Orthopaedic Training in London (Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital South East Orthopaedic Training Programme). He has also completed the Foot and Ankle fellowship in Cambridge (Addenbrookes Hospital) and was nominated for the European Foot and Ankle Society Travelling Fellow of the year 2009. This gave him the opportunity to work with eminent Foot and Ankle Surgeons in USA at Dallas, Charlotte (North Carolina) and Rochester (New York).

Prof Bhatia has written a chapter on Forefoot disorders in the Oxford Textbook of Trauma & Orthopaedics which can be viewed here. He has been invited as a faculty in international meetings and workshops. He is an advisor to National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) & National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

Prof Bhatia is a member of scientific committee of European Foot Ankle Society and education committee of British Orthopaedic Foot Ankle Society (BOFAS). In addition to this clinical and academic interests he has served as the clinical director of LLR Alliance and Head of Service of Elective Orthopaedics.
