Lydia Patient Expierence
Talo navicular joint fusion initially & then calcaneocuboid joint fusion
Good evening,
I was a patient of Mr Bhatia’s from the Nuffield in Leicester a number of years ago. He probably won’t remember but just wanted to get in touch and let him know how I’m getting on!
I think it was 2015, I had a bad ankle break after a horse riding accident and it was missed when I first went to the hospital. Once I went back a month later I was referred straight to Mr Bhatia. I had 3 operations including fusion of the right ankle, talonavicular and calcanaecuboid joints. I was about 22 at the time and riding racehorses and teaching fitness classes for a living. Both of which he said I would no longer be able to do, along with probably no running or wearing heels! Prognosis wasn’t great and I ended up having 3 operations and had a fair bit of pain for the following years. It did gradually improve however and the last 2/3 years I have been running up to 18km, teaching yoga and taking part in park runs with my quickest time so far being 5km in 22:54.
I still have reduced mobility and have some pain, particularly in cold weather but nothing that prevents me doing any activities I want to.
All in all, just wanted to say a massive thank you to him for doing such an amazing job, it was pretty bleak at the time for a young person whose whole life revolved around being active. I remember there was a time I seriously considered wanting an amputation as it was so painful so I’m incredibly grateful every day that I can go running and it’s not holding me back at all!
Thank you so much!
Lydia
